As a 22-year-old graduate of a Bachelor of Science Program, I have acquired some very essential and vital lessons along the road, and it is my aim to share these with new nurses in order to successfully lead them down their career path.
As the child of immigrant Carribean parents, it was instilled in me that education is one of my most valuable advantages in advancing in life. As a result, I selected nursing profession since that was what I exposed to as an adolescent, witnessing my aunts and cousins work as nurses. I knew right away that I am a natural caregiver and a compassionate person, so I applied to the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and was admitted.
I matriculated myself in the Bachelor of Science degree program and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, eagerly accepting my first Registered Nurse position at the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Two years later, in 2009, I returned to earn a Master's degree in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialization. I received the aforementioned degree from Thomas Jefferson University in 2011 and became a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner in 2012.
I accepted a position with a well-known convenient care clinic, where I began my experience as a Nurse Practitioner and greatly enhanced my abilities. Following that, I was suggested by a colleague for an Adjunct Faculty job at Drexel University, where I took a position teaching med-surg to nursing clinical students. It was fantastic. I worked as an Adjunct Faculty member for Drexel, Miami Dade College, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing for the past eight years and really got to know the ins and outs of nursing students and new to practice nurses.
In 2020, I chose to retire from my Nurse Practitioner position and return to the bedside as an RN. I also mentor new to practice nurses on the unit and coordinate the monthly journal club. My return to bedside nursing fueled my desire to train new nurses, coach them, and assist them in making the transition from nursing student to nurse. The process can be fraught with difficulties, steep learning curves, and social concerns, but I am here to assist in making the move as helpful and supportive as possible.
Through coaching, consulting, and one-on-one mentoring, I am displaying my enthusiasm for guiding new nurses through the field and ensuring they are not devoured by fellow colleagues, uncertainty, and fear.
